Bike Rental

Whether from the health campus to the campus sports hall or from the HZO to the Hustadt - with bike sharing from the company nextbike you are mobile even without your own bike.

Bicycles can be rented and returned in the following locations:

• Bochum
• Bottrop
• Dortmund
• Duisburg
• Essen
• Gelsenkirchen
• Hamm
• Herne
• Lünen
• Moers (from July 2026)
• Mülheim an der Ruhr
• Neukirchen-Vluyn (from July 2026)
• Oberhausen
• Recklinghausen District (from August 2026)
• Witten

Special Conditions for University Members

Students and employees of Ruhr University Bochum receive special conditions: The first 60 minutes of each rental are free of charge. If the journey takes longer than 60 minutes, 50 cents are charged for every additional 30 minutes. The maximum daily rate is 5 euros. Up to four bikes can be rented at the same time on one account. The discount applies to two bikes at the same time.

How to register and rent bikes

• You can register and rent bikes via the Donkey Republic app.
• Download the Donkey Republic app (App Store | Google Play Store) and register with your Ruhr University Bochum e-mail address.
• Then select the membership "Ruhr Uni Bochum Studierendentarif" (Ruhr Uni Bochum student tariff) in your profile
• You must link a payment method. To verify the selected means of payment, a travel credit of a maximum of 1 euro is stored.
• You can use the app to find the bikes or MetropolradRuhr stations in your area, unlock them and return them to a drop-off point shown in the app after your ride. → Further information and FAQs on the metropolradruhr website
