FAQ on the Topic of Mobility

On this page we answer the most frequently asked questions about mobility at Ruhr University Bochum. The individual subject areas are summarized in terms of content.

Bicycle Use and Infrastructure on Campus

Is it possible to shower on campus if you arrive by bike?

There are currently no showers for cyclists on campus. The overall mobility measures on campus project includes an analysis of which showers on campus are suitable for release.

What are the plans for bicycle boxes?

There are currently 12 bicycle boxes with a total of 274 parking spaces. The bike boxes are 100 percent overbooked, meaning that 548 spaces are currently available.

Can I park and charge my pedelec in the bike boxes and when will charging stations for pedelecs be available?

Parking is possible, but charging is unfortunately not yet possible. However, as e-mobility - including e-cars and e-scooters as well as pedelecs - is now part of everyday life for many people, this is set to change as part of the mobility strategy. We are currently examining a variety of legal and technical framework conditions to which Ruhr University Bochum, as a public corporation, is subject when setting up an e-charging infrastructure for the "small town campus".

We will report here as soon as we have any news.

Are there bicycle repair facilities on campus?

Yes, there is an AStA bicycle self-help workshop in the "glass box" on the Nordforum.

Ruhr University Bochum also offers bicycle repair stations (to the locations).

Costs and Financing

Why is car parking free, while bicycle boxes cost something?

In 2012, a survey conducted as part of the "MOVE" project revealed that the majority of Ruhr University Bochum members are willing to pay a small usage fee for a secure bicycle parking space. The usage fee is also intended to encourage people to cancel a bicycle parking space that is no longer needed and make it available to the general public again.

Gibt es die Möglichkeit des Fahrradleasings mit Jobrad?

Until now, job bike leasing could not be implemented in NRW as there was no regulation for civil servants. Thanks to an amendment to the law, this hurdle has now been overcome.

The new Act on the Adjustment of Service and Pension Payments for 2024 and 2025 and the amendment of other service law regulations now make it possible for universities to offer job bike leasing to both civil servants and employees covered by collective agreements via a so-called deferred compensation scheme.

The state of NRW is currently examining how the regulation can be implemented. Further information on bicycle leasing at Ruhr University Bochum can be found in the Serviceportal for employees (German website).

E-mobility and Charging Stations

Where can I charge my e-car? When are charging stations coming?

New parking area projects include parking spaces for electric car charging points. A third of the parking spaces in the east parking garage will be pre-equipped for future charging points. Due to the planning and construction period, these options are not yet available. In the meantime, the equipping of the campus with public charging points is being investigated.

Mobility Services and Concepts

Are there bike sharing systems on campus?

Yes, the "nextbike" provider is available on campus. Members of Ruhr University Bochum can use the first 60 minutes free of charge. You have to register once with your Ruhr University Bochum e-mail address. Further information can be found in the mobility portal under bike rental.
