Safety on Campus

Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is working hard to increase safety on campus with particular focus on the parking garages.

Emergency Number

Stickers on all toilets and on the entrance doors to the parking garages provide information on where those affected by physical or verbal abuse can get help. The quickest way is by telephone. You can reach the RUB Campus Control Center using the following number:

Tip

  • It is best to save the number in your phone under “Aa Campus Control Center” so that it is displayed at the top of your contacts.

Assault victims who have not called the emergency number right away, but would like to report an incident afterwards, can also contact Ruhr University Bochum's Anti-Discrimination Office as an alternative to the Campus Control Center:

Security Service

The security service maintains a presence on campus throughout the day and regularly checks the central parking garage, alongside other areas.

Together with the Bochum police, the option of installing camera surveillance has been discussed several times, in particular for the central parking garage. According to the police, in many situations CCTV neither prevents crime nor is it of much help during investigations. Criminals wear disguises or seek out areas that are out of frame of the surveillance cameras. There are also legal restrictions on the use of cameras.

Women's Parking Spaces

There are women's parking spaces near the G buildings and underneath the SSC building (Student Service Center). In total, there are over 7,000 parking spaces available on campus, many of which are better equipped than the central parking structure in terms of lighting and visibility.

Compared to other public places, the number of assault cases is average or lower. However, like other public spaces, it is not a safe space with guaranteed security. It is open to the public and is the size of a small town. As with public spaces, it is not possible to seal off the campus and prevent people with bad intentions from finding their way here.

Ruhr University Bochum is constantly working to further increase security on campus. To this end, we are in regular contact with the Bochum police and with the victims of assault.
